Larry Williams hiding behind kangaroo

“Not keen to test his word against...the...IRS”

LarryWilliams Yesterday’s reference to the Larry Williams “jaws of death” indicator reminded these pixels that the trading alleged guru has incomplete business with the US Attorney for the Southern District of California, in re: alleged shortfalls in his distributions to the Internal Revenue Service. More than two years after his arrest in Sydney, Australia, he is still battling extradition to the US.

Not that he’s got a guilty conscience or anything. Instead, according to one interview, he:

...claims he has broken no US laws and caused no financial loss to the US government, but he is not keen to test his word against that of the mighty IRS. “It’s just one guy, me, against the might of the US government and the IRS,” he said...

Williams spent some time in jail after his arrest, on May 20 2006, but was released on $A 1 million bail. He is free to travel within Australia, provided he reports his movements to police. And while he has lost at least one appeal against his extradition, a spokesman for the US Attorney in San Diego said yesterday that “the case continues to be litigated in Australia.”

According to US court records, the only recent movement in the case has been the filing of appearances, in Feb. 2008, by defense counsel Robert G. Bernhoft and Robert E. Barnes, of The Bernhoft Law Firm, Milwaukee, Wis. The person who answered the phone there yesterday said that neither attorney was available.

His legal concerns haven’t kept Williams entirely off the grid.

He occasionally pops up as a contributor to Victor Niederhoffer’s charmingly eccentric ‘Daily Speculations’ website, seemingly tempting fate in one contribution that characterized the indictment of baseball home-run king Barry Bonds as “like a football game of pile on...Typical DOJ stuff.”

And he tossed a dingo into the controversial aftermath of the death earlier this year of Australian film star Heath Ledger, father of actress Michelle Williams’ — Larry’s daughter — child.

Larry Williams, who is one of the world’s best known stock market traders, said he was perplexed that documents filed in a New York court listed Ledger's assets at just $145,000...“I have no idea what Heath Ledger was worth (but) they certainly haven't stated all of the assets to the court.”

And you would know that how, Larry?

Williams conceded that he did not have a close relationship with his daughter and that he was not in constant contact with her.
